In today’s world, where smartphones are in almost everyone’s pocket, standalone media players are no longer as popular as they used to be. However, the interest in retro designs has brought these old devices back into the spotlight. Designer Eslam Mhd’s concept aims to revive the nostalgic Winamp media player as a physical device.
The iconic Winamp concept returns as a physical device
Winamp was a popular media player application in the 1990s and early 2000s, known for its flexible structure that allowed users to customize the application’s interface. This concept brings Winamp’s modular structure to life as a real device, taking us back to the good old days.
The three main components—media control unit, equalizer, and album cover and playlist panel—are attached to each other with a magnetic connection system and can be arranged as desired. This modular structure allows users to customize the device according to their needs and personal preferences.
The media control unit includes basic functions like play, pause, forward, and rewind. The equalizer has physical sliders for adjusting the sound. The album cover and playlist panel provides visual elements for the music you’re listening to.
These three components can be combined in different configurations. For example, the media control unit can be placed on top of the equalizer, with the album cover and playlist panel positioned behind, creating a more compact device.
Alternatively, a simple setup can be achieved using only the media control unit and equalizer. This modular Winamp concept offers an alternative to touchscreens by using physical controls.
The physical buttons and sliders maintain the device’s retro feel while adding a modern touch. This concept brings Winamp’s LEGO-like structure into the physical world, allowing users to customize their devices as they wish.
The concept also ensures the device’s portability. All components can be easily connected and carried together thanks to magnetic connections. This means the device can be used both as a desktop and a portable media player.
